anywhere at a moment’s notice, you might think of a mobile app. But
what if you also needed it to function just as well on a multi-screen
desktop or during a presentation on a 9-panel TV wall display?
his is exactly what we were asked
to provide. Our job was to provide
design and strategy for an internal web
app that would combine many pieces of
software into a single, efficient platform.
he other requirement was for a
secure, consistent and accessible
app that syncronized their team while
fascilitating group analysis in meetings or
presentations across multi-TV displays.
hen you’re managing enormous
sums of money, there's much to be
gained in having efficient & convenient
tools that make it easy to understand and
compare large amounts of information.
We emphasized smart transitions for
content, layout and navigation across
desktop, large-format displays, and touch-
screen devices for consistent functionality.
Usability was central to the
purpose of the project, and so
great attention to detail was
spent evaluating how different
user could interact with and
move through the mobile
web experience without
deviating from the idea of an
expanding navigation.
A multi-tiered menu provided
optimal content organization.
This enabled users to quickly
investigate, select & compare
data, commit detailed
searches without loosing their
current work flow, and map
out the movement of stocks
and sectors over time.
We also focused on long-term
sustainabillity by using a
combination of the bootstrap
grid, liquid design elements,
and the theming of widgets &
categories that could be
modularly built by their own
programming staff who
specialized in back-end dev.
More than just a convenient
way to track statistics, we
wanted to make this a great
research tool. Every widget
was made to be interactive
with every piece of live
information being linked to
an information trail that
allowed a user to investigate
sources, alternative
interpretations and related
information. Widgets were
also made to dynamically
switch between frameworks,
charts and indexes, pulling
large amounts of data
from the cloud & populating
display formats on the fly.
This project was all about efficiency, but
that made design even more important to
help make dense information easy to
digest while still being visually attractive.
For this reason, we chose something
calm and clean with clear visual heirarchy.
More than just providing a great soltuion,
we gave our client the gramework they
needed so that they could continue to
evolve and grow to meet their own needs
while continuing to partner together for
strategy and impilementation.
In addition to client feedback, we spent
time interviewing regular users of mobile
& desktop financial software. These
discoveries lead us to the expanding
charts and widgets as well as a multi-tier
grid menu on the mobile version.
One additional advantage to making a
web app, beyond accessability, was the
ability to integrate many developer APIs
from partners and service providers. We
wanted to take advantage of the robust
financial analysis already available online.
With so much data being confidential, we
worked with their in-house team to provide
regular updates so they could build out the
back-end functionality in tandem with our
front-end dev team to avoid any concerns
of security breach on our side.
I was the principal designer for all of the work shown unless otherwise noted, and I am the author and creator of the case studies within this portfolio. This website exists as a digital resume for the purpose of providing proof of experience in order to gain future potential work. Many of these projects were completed collaboratively in a “creative for hire” agency, freelance contract, or software company with copyright assigned to that entity or client.
I always have language in my creative contracts that I discuss with clients and employers that specifies my ability to display my work publicly. This includes concepts and processes as well as final deliverables, given that all of these are necessary to display my competence as a UX and Product Designer. I follow best practices to the best of my ability to assure that my work for clients is in compliance with copyright, either through open licensing or purchase of stock photography, mockups, icons, and other creative resources. However, I recognize that digital ownership is sometimes disputed on the internet. I do not assume legal liability for work completed in good faith on behalf of corporations and organizations, even if it is displayed here in my Resume. Even so, I take copyright and intellectual property seriously as a professional designer and photographer.
If you have any questions or concerns about something displayed here, please contact me and I will do my best to resolve them as simply and expediently as possible. Thank you!
